Tim Smith's Visual Rhetoric 3/9/2012

Tim Smith made some interesting points about visual rhetoric, and the idea of visual montage. I thought it was interesting to look more at the film side than the static image, and see how the ideas transfer to that medium. The point I found most interesting was how he compared visual rhetoric to collage; all the pieces hold individual meanings which come together to create a new overall idea. I thought this was a good metaphor for how visual rhetoric works to establish arguments using images. It was also interesting that he addressed the idea of weather a photograph is art or not, all tied in with the idea of surrealism.

Glossary Entry

"Proving Opposites": 'Proving opposites' refers to rhetoric's ability to construct and weigh multiple sides of an issue. In the decision making process, before an act can be decided upon all of the choices must be considered, and rhetorical conversation is the best medium to find all of the potential options. (Ramage, 26-28).
